UNDERWOOD,
William J. (1912-2000) was born on 12 November 1912
and started his career at Lyons, in 1928, in the
Despatch Office. By the time war broke out he was a
supervisor. Between 1940-1946 he served in the
Royal Artillery as a gunnery instructor and later
as a weapon and field training instructor of
infantry. On his return to Lyons after the war
William Underwood joined the Engineers Stores
Office, Abbey Road, and went from there to the
wages office at Cadby Hall, then to the Bakery
Sales Office and then to the Statistical Office. In
1950 he was transferred to the accounting
department of Ice Cream Sales and later took charge
of the newly-formed Statistical Section there.
Three years later (1953) he opened Ice Cream's
first regional office. This was the start of a of
an 18 year period of opening, rationalising,
closing, merging and running various office
departments within Ice Cream and Total
Refrigeration. Later he became manager at Lyons
Maid head office. In 1971 Underwood took charge of
Lyons Bakery's financial accounting and when Bakery
moved to Carlton he went with them. He retired in
1977 and died on 13 January 2000.
