OATLEY,
Charles Wake (1857-1922). Charles Oatley was born
on 11 December 1857 and joined Lyons in about 1892
as an advisor in decorative work. His knowledge was
not only confined to decoration but he had a
mastery of all aspects of building work which the
Board recognised when they put him in charge of the
Construction Department. Essentially practical, he
was given a free hand of interior decorative work
and was responsible for the design of the first
teashop which Lyons opened in 1894. Described as an
Architect/Surveyor Oatley was appointed to the
Board in 1898 and remained a director until his
death in 1922.
