The Following Company Names Are General Titles

See Also Index of Subsidiary Companies

This page explains where the various subsidiary companies (and departments, units, hotels, and brands) of J. Lyons & Company are currently located as at March 2006 and should be interpreted as a guide only. The new owners have not necessarily kept the same company/hotel/unit names but in some cases they have retained the brand names which were once part of J. Lyons & Co. For example the ice cream product known as FAB is still made by the current owners, Richmond Foods Ltd, and Red Label Tea is still made by the new owners. The company names used here do not necessarily represent the official company title but they are names which former company employees, and members of the public, will be familiar with. Some of the subsidiary listings originally operated independently but were merged with other operations as the main Lyons holding company restructured itself under several Sector Groups (Divisions) in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Some of the subsidiaries listed here, particularly the North American ones, did not form part of the original (independent) J. Lyons & Co but came into the Group when Lyons became the Food Division of Allied Breweries Ltd in 1978. The Embassy Hotel Group, consisting of some 40 hotels, has been excluded from this list. Management of Embassy Hotels was transferred to J. Lyons and Co Ltd (the Food Division of Allied-Lyons plc) in September 1979 but they were sold to Jarvis Hotels in July 1990 for £M186 following a decision by the Main Board, in 1985, that the Lyons food businesses were to be sold. By this time Allied-Lyons plc had acquired large Canadian and Spanish drinks businesses and had re-titled itself Allied Domecq plc. After this date little or no mention is made in respect of the disposal of the individual Food Division companies and as a result it is difficult to track subsequent ownerships. One or two key dates, which bear no relationship to trading companies, are listed for interest only. The subsidiary company list below is not comprehensive but incorporates most operations.

The hierarchical structure of this listing is set out thus:

The left aligned name, in black coloured text, is the original Lyons company/department and if this had subsidiaries, or associated companies and/or well known brands, then these are listed below the main name in blue text. These subsidiaries/departments/brands are not listed in any ranking ascendance or importance. The purchasing company is then indented to the right and appears in red text with date of sale if known. Some companies may have passed through more than one owner since its original disposal by Lyons. These too, if known, are shown in red text in order of acquisition. Thus:

Lyons Main Trading Company Name.

Subsidiary A  ]
Subsidiary B ]
Subsidiary C ]
Associated Company A ] Or any other combination;
Associated Company B ]
Brand A ]
Brand B ]

First Purchasing Company. January 1986.

Second Purchasing Company. December 1990.

Third Purchasing Company. August 2000.

In some cases a short explanation is given under a purchasing company to assist with understanding. Hotels are listed alphabetically under the main Hotel listing. Allied Domecq plc was not a Lyons company but was the parent of J. Lyons & Co. Ltd. It is shown here for interest only.
