How to transpose an
equation
This simply means - 'how
to rearrange an equation'. It is one of the methods
to use in arriving at an answer.
An equation is just two things
that are equal.
Supposing we have :
100 = y + 20
Then to get the value of 'y'
we transpose and take 20 away from both
sides.
Remember whatever we do to
one side of the = sign, we have to do also to the
other side, so the next line becomes.
100 - 20 = y + 20 - 20
(although we usually don't write the last two
20's)
So it becomes:
100 - 20 = y
y = 80
Another example. This time to get rid of a
fraction. :
Suppose our equation is:
100 = y + y÷4
Here we transpose by
multipying both sides by 4. The next line
becomes:
100x4 = 4y + y
400 =
5y.................Then
we divide both sides by 5
y = 80
Third example:
3K
......4SB
------ = -------
MY........F
Here you can take two steps
at once by cross multiplying and get:
3K x F = SB x
MY
Then to solve for K
K = SB x MY ÷
3F
