Question 7:

Simon has 16 more cards than Peter. Phillip has 6 fewer cards than Simon. Adam has 4 cards. James has half as many cards as Simon. Altogether there are 50 cards. How many cards have they each?

Let's first list the people mentioned. There are five people.

Remember the one we don't know anything about is the one we call 'x'.

Peter = x

Simon = x + 16

Phillip = x - 6

Allan = 4

James = (x + 16 ) ÷ 2

Now we make the equation like this:

50 = (x + 16) + (x - 6) + 4 + {(x + 16) ÷ 2}

50 = 3x + 14 + (x÷2) + (16÷2)

100 = 6x + 28 + x + 16...............((Multiply both sides by 2)

100 = 7x + 44

100 - 44 = 7x

56 = 7x

x =
