Learn the basics of Algebra in 3 minutes

No preamble, we'll plunge straight in. See if you can follow the question below and how we deal with it.

Question 1:

June has 2 more cookies than Robert. June and Robert combined have 8 cookies. How many cookies do they each have?

Let 'x' equal the number of cookies Robert has. (We use 'x' for the person we don't know anything about)

Therefore June has (x + 2) cookies.

Combined they have 8 cookies.

We write this in the form of an equation and then proceed to solve it: (An equation is when two things are equal)

The equation is solved using the same means as in normal arithmatic. - -

------------------8 = The number Robert has + the number June has

---- ---- - - ------- Robert--------June
---- -- - -- ------- ../ /-- - - - - - /
----------------- 8 = x + (x + 2)

----------------- 8 = 2x + 2-----------(Add the 'x's together)

-------------8 - 2 = 2x --------(Take 2 away from each side so that there are only

----------------------------------------------------------------------------numbers on one side))

---------- -------6 = 2x--------- (Bring to a single number)

----- ----- 6 ÷ 2 = x--------(Divide both sides by 2 to get a single 'x')

---------- -------x = 3------- (x = Robert)
